Alongside knowledge, conscience grows too

At Gökkuşağı Schools, students gain empathy, responsibility and solidarity by taking part in projects that benefit the community. Alongside academic success, we raise individuals who are socially aware and conscientious.

What Are Social Responsibility and Community Service?

Connecting learning to real life

Social responsibility and community service cover the activities individuals undertake to benefit society, help others and build environmental awareness. At Gökkuşağı, this work is a way of learning that runs throughout the year and brings the student face to face with real social needs.

Knowledge learned in the classroom takes on meaning in an aid campaign, an environmental clean-up or a visit to our elders. This experience teaches empathy, responsibility and solidarity not from books, but through living them.

Our aim is to raise individuals who are as conscientious and socially aware as they are academically successful.

Our students gain empathy and responsibility by contributing to the community
The Core Values of the Programme

Four values that touch the community

Empathy and helping others, social awareness, character development and active citizenship; these form the essence of our social responsibility work.

  • I

    Empathy and Helping Others

Social responsibility projects develop the student’s ability to put themselves in another’s place and to help others.

  • II

    Social Awareness

The student gains an outlook that is sensitive to social problems and to the needs of those around them.

  • III

    Character Development

The experience of adding value to the community strengthens character traits such as responsibility, honesty and selflessness.

  • IV

    Active Citizenship

The student learns to make a difference as a responsible part of local and global communities.

Why Does It Matter?

The most valuable lesson that cannot be taught in a classroom

Empathy, responsibility and solidarity can only be learned by living them. Community service is a powerful area of growth in which the student turns academic knowledge into a real need met, and learns to put themselves in another’s place.

This approach is at the heart of international education too: “Service” in the IB programme’s CAS component, “Voluntary Service” in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the solidarity in UNESCO’s global citizenship education all share the same value. The Gökkuşağı student is part of this universal responsibility.
