IB Schools in Turkey: A Guide for International Families
What IB authorisation really means, how to verify it, and what to ask on a campus visit — a practical guide for families looking for an IB school in Istanbul, Ankara and across Turkey.
IB schools in Turkey can be verified in minutes in the IB's own directory — the "Find an IB World School" search at ibo.org — before you book a single visit. The fact families most often miss: IB authorization is granted per programme and per campus, not per school name. So the right question is not "Is this an IB school?" but "Which IB programmes does this campus hold, and since when?"
What Does "IB World School" Actually Mean?
An IB World School is a school the International Baccalaureate has authorized to deliver at least one of its programmes — a specific, checked permission, not a general seal covering everything the school does.
Verification takes minutes: the IB lists every authorized school in the "Find an IB World School" directory at ibo.org, and each entry shows exactly which programmes are covered. Not listed means not authorized.
Two labels are worth separating. A candidate school is working toward authorization under the IB's guidance — a legitimate stage, but not yet authorization. A group's brand can also be wider than one campus — check which campus holds the authorization you care about.
How Do the IB Programmes Fit Together?
The IB is not one programme but a family of them, arranged by age — the Primary Years Programme (ages 3–12), the Middle Years Programme (11–16) and the Diploma Programme (16–19) — and few schools anywhere offer all three.
The PYP treats learning as inquiry rather than a list of subjects: children build knowledge through their own questions, organized around six transdisciplinary themes, and close the programme with the PYP Exhibition — a researched project presented to the school community. The Diploma Programme is a two-year qualification for grades 11 and 12, taught in more than 5,300 schools worldwide. Students study one subject from each of six groups — two language groups, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics and the arts — and complete the DP core: Theory of Knowledge, an Extended Essay of around 4,000 words, and CAS (creativity, activity, service). Authorization is not all-or-nothing
A school may be authorized for one programme, two or all three — the directory entry shows which.
An "IB school" may therefore deliver only part of that continuum — not a defect, but a model to understand. Ours is deliberate: PYP through the early and primary years, the national curriculum together with the Cambridge programme in the middle years, and the DP as an option in the final two years of high school. Whichever school you visit, ask it to draw the whole line from kindergarten to graduation, stage by stage.
What Should Families in Istanbul and Ankara Look At?
Search by campus, not by brand: in a multi-campus school, IB authorization belongs to specific campuses, and in a city like Istanbul the campus address will shape your family's entire day.
Our own table shows why. Gökkuşağı Schools holds IB World School and Cambridge International School status across eight campuses in five cities — yet the PYP is authorized at three Istanbul campuses, Ataşehir, Bahçeşehir and Bahçelievler, while the Diploma Programme runs at Bahçelievler and our Ankara Çankaya campus. In Istanbul, Bahçelievler is where both ends of the IB line meet; in Ankara, the DP option is Çankaya.

An IB label does not by itself guarantee an international classroom, so ask how many nationalities the school enrols; across our campuses, more than 2,000 students come from 47 countries and our teachers from 18.
What Should You Ask on a School Visit?
A visit is where directory facts become classroom evidence — favour questions whose answers you can watch, not only hear.
- Authorization history: which programmes, at this campus, since when — and how many DP cohorts have graduated here? Joining the first cohort is legitimate, but know it in advance.
- Real subject lists: which subjects are actually timetabled in each DP group this year — which sciences, which languages — and whether the arts group can be swapped for another subject.
- The core in practice: who teaches Theory of Knowledge, how Extended Essays are supervised, and what CAS looks like in an ordinary week.
- PYP evidence: ask to see a unit of inquiry in progress, and last year's PYP Exhibition topics.
- Support for arriving families: what happens for a child who starts with no Turkish, and how parents who do not read Turkish stay informed — in our case, counselling is in-house, classroom plans go home as a Weekly Parent Letter, and we publish in Turkish, English, Russian and Arabic.
A badge on a website is a claim; a directory entry is a fact; a classroom in mid-inquiry is the proof.
What Does the IB Diploma Mean for University Admission?
The IB Diploma is recognised by the world's leading universities and treated as a strong academic reference in many admission processes — and in Turkey it works alongside the national diploma, not instead of it.
At Turkish private schools, DP students also complete the national curriculum; our students graduate with the Turkish high school diploma and the IB Diploma together. Entry requirements are set by each university and country, so confirm them on the university's own pages rather than relying on any school's summary — ours included.
How Should You Think About Fees?
There is no single "IB school price" in Turkey: fees are set by each school and differ by campus and by stage, so compare only written, current totals.
Ask what the annual figure includes and what is invoiced separately — external examination fees often are — and how fees are revised each year.
