IB Schools in Istanbul: Where to Find PYP and the Diploma Programme

IB schools in Istanbul exist on both sides of the city, but IB authorization is granted per programme and per campus — never to a school name as a whole. An Istanbul shortlist starts with two questions: which programme does your child need — the Primary Years Programme (ages 3–12) or the Diploma Programme (the final two years of high school) — and on which side of the city will your family live and commute? How Do You Start an IB School Search in Istanbul?

Start with the IB's own directory rather than school brochures: the "Find an IB World School" search at ibo.org lists every authorized school, and each entry shows which programmes that campus holds; filter by country and city for Istanbul's real list.

Read it in campuses, not brands: Istanbul school groups often run several campuses, and a programme authorized at one address may not exist at another carrying the same name.

Asian Side or European Side: How Does Geography Shape the Shortlist?

In Istanbul, the side of the city you live on filters your school list before any curriculum question does — the city spans two continents, and a daily crossing between them is a real cost for a child.

The practical order is: fix the side first, using home and workplaces; then shortlist the IB campuses on that side; only then compare programmes and classrooms. A school that sits across the water from your daily life rarely survives a full school year, however good its paperwork.

Our own map shows how uneven a campus picture can be. Gökkuşağı Schools has four Istanbul campuses; three hold IB authorization, one does not:

On the Asian side, our Ataşehir campus holds the PYP; on the European side, Bahçelievler holds the PYP and DP, and our Bahçeşehir campus the PYP. Beylikdüzü, plainly, offers no IB programme — families there choose its Cambridge track.

Where Can You Study the IB Diploma Programme in Istanbul?

Within Gökkuşağı Schools, the IB Diploma Programme in Istanbul runs at one address — the Bahçelievler campus, on the European side — and the DP occupies only the final two years of high school, grades 11 and 12.

That two-year window matters for planning. At our schools, the years between primary and grade 11 follow the national curriculum together with the Cambridge programme; we do not offer the IB Middle Years Programme, and we would rather say so than imply an unbroken IB line. Ask every school: what exactly do the middle years look like here?

DP students at Turkish private schools also complete the national curriculum, so our graduates leave with the Turkish high school diploma and the IB Diploma together.

Ours is not the only DP in the city: other Istanbul schools hold the authorization too, and the ibo.org directory is the current, neutral list — confirm it at the specific campus you would enrol in.

How Should Commute and School Buses Enter the Decision?

Treat the commute as part of the curriculum: the hours an Istanbul child spends on the road each week come out of sleep, play and homework.

We quote no travel times — Istanbul traffic makes any single number misleading. Test the route yourself instead, at school-run hours and in both directions, before you decide.

• School bus coverage: ask which neighbourhoods this campus's buses actually serve, and how long your child's planned route runs in practice.
• Siblings: if your children are at different stages, check whether one campus can carry both through the coming years — or you are quietly signing up for two school runs.
• Home and school together: if you have not settled on a neighbourhood yet, treat home and school as one decision, not two made in sequence.

What Should You Ask on an Istanbul School Visit?

Visit with campus-specific questions, because the honest answers differ even between two campuses of the same school.

• Authorization, here: which IB programmes is this campus authorized for, and since when? Match the answer against the campus's ibo.org entry.
• The whole line: if primary school is PYP, what follows it at this campus — and if the DP interests you, what do grades 9 and 10 look like before it begins?
• The DP in practice: which subjects are actually timetabled this year in each of the six groups, and how are Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS organized?
• Arriving families: what support exists for a child who starts with little Turkish — and how do parents who do not read Turkish stay informed? At our campuses, classroom plans go home in a Weekly Parent Letter, and we publish in Turkish, English, Russian and Arabic.

What If You Are Looking Outside Istanbul?

The same per-campus logic applies in every Turkish city — and it obliges us to say plainly where we do and do not offer the IB.

In Ankara, our Çankaya campus is authorized for the Diploma Programme. In İzmir we offer no IB programme at all: our İzmir Çiğli campus is a registered Cambridge school, and a family set on the IB in İzmir should search the ibo.org directory. The same holds for Bursa Özlüce and Antalya Muratpaşa — Cambridge campuses, without IB authorization.

All eight of our campuses, across five cities, hold Cambridge International School status, so in a non-IB city the honest conversation turns to what the Cambridge track offers instead.
