What Does "Cambridge International School" Actually Mean?

The title is a formal authorisation, not a teaching style: a Cambridge International School is authorised by Cambridge International, its students are enrolled in the global Cambridge register with an official student identity, and its assessments are evaluated in the United Kingdom.

The phrase gets borrowed, though. Some schools add Cambridge coursebooks to a local curriculum and call the result "Cambridge education" — without accreditation, an official student identity or UK-based assessment, that is usually just an English-heavy lesson with no internationally valid qualification at the end.

How Is the Cambridge Pathway Structured?

The Cambridge Pathway is a four-stage staircase covering ages 5 to 19 — Primary, Lower Secondary, Upper Secondary (IGCSE) and Advanced (AS & A Level) — with each stage building on the one before it.

What Should Families Ask on a School Visit?

Six questions separate an authorised Cambridge school from a school with Cambridge books on a shelf — none requires expertise, only persistence.

1. Is this exact campus in the directory? Check cambridgeinternational.org before the visit; if it is not listed, ask the school to explain.
2. Which stages are actually taught here? Primary through A Level is a different commitment from Primary alone — ask where the pathway currently ends at this campus.
3. Where do students sit their exams? An authorised examination centre runs Checkpoint and international exams on site, under Cambridge supervision.
4. Which IGCSE subjects are offered? More than 70 exist worldwide; no school teaches them all — ask for this year's actual list.
5. Can you see a Checkpoint report? A school with real ones will happily show you an anonymised example.
6. How many weekly hours are genuinely in English? Ask for the timetable, not the brochure summary.

One more habit: authorisation is granted per programme — and for some programmes, per campus. A school can be Cambridge at every campus yet hold other authorisations, such as the IB, at only some; ask about the campus your child would actually attend.
