The IB Diploma is accepted by leading universities across the world — from Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard to the Sorbonne and the University of Barcelona — and each institution sets its own expectation for the total score, which is calculated out of 45. Among the examples in this guide, the approximate thresholds range from about 27 to about 42, usually alongside proof of language proficiency such as a TOEFL result. Which Universities Accept the IB Diploma?

In outline, the approximate thresholds run as follows: around 42 for Oxford, Harvard and Princeton; around 40 for Cambridge, Yale, MIT, Stanford, Columbia and King's College London; around 37 for Edinburgh, LSE, NYU and Northwestern; 34 for St Andrews; 33 for the Sorbonne; 32 for Manchester; and 27 for the University of Barcelona. Alongside the score itself, some institutions attach language conditions of their own — the Sorbonne, for example, may also ask for French at B2 level.

How Do Universities Evaluate an IB Application?

In most cases, universities weigh the total IB score together with language proficiency and the rest of the application file, rather than judging the diploma alone. An applicant whose IB score sits within the target university's admission range, and who reaches a sufficient grade in a language exam such as TOEFL, sees the likelihood of studying abroad rise markedly. Programme-specific conditions can then come on top of that general picture.

Part of the reason the diploma travels so well is its structure. The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year course for students aged 16 to 19, delivered today in more than 5,300 schools worldwide, and it awards an internationally recognised diploma. Students take one subject from each of six groups and complete the diploma core: Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service.

The Extended Essay in particular — an independent research paper of around 4,000 words — is direct preparation for university-level work. This is one reason many leading universities treat the IB Diploma as a strong academic reference in the application process.
