Art That Endures: Our Theatre Activities
Guided by their literature teachers, Bahçelievler Gökkuşağı Koleji high school students watched four theatre plays. This artistic journey, told through the students’ impressions.
A group of high school students from Bahçelievler Gökkuşağı Koleji, guided by their literature teachers, watched a series of theatre plays. Spent under the light of the stage, these evenings offered students not only an enjoyable time but also the chance to think, to build empathy and to broaden their cultural horizons. Here are those plays and the students' impressions.
Giydirici
Grade 10 and 11 students watched the play Giydirici at the Cevahir State Theatre. Set in the atmosphere of the Second World War, it told the story of an idealistic art troupe who refused to give up staging their plays. The play laid bare the reflections of the destruction wrought by war on art and on the artist.
The actors stood before us as one with their roles; this allowed us not only to watch the theatre but to become one with it and think.
Seksen Günde Devr-i Alem
Set in London in 1872, the play centres on the wager made by Mr Phileas Fogg, a true English gentleman, that he could travel around the world in eighty days, and it was a gripping production in which five actors brought dozens of roles to life. The students watched this extraordinary journey with delight. Serra Yalçın said, "Thanks to these outings I began to love theatre," while İdil Kumbasar summed up her experience with the words, "The plays we went to broadened my horizons."
Karmakarışık
The students watched Karmakarışık, a play that begins when a respected minister comes across a corpse in a hotel room and unfolds through intertwining events. Blending comic and ironic moments, the production conveyed in an entertaining way how a small lie can grow.
If I tell one lie, everything that follows becomes impossible to untangle; the play conveyed this to the audience in a funny way.
Metot
A group of Grade 10 and 12 students watched the play Metot at the Fatih Çevre Theatre. Directed by and starring Serkan Keskin, the play dealt with the elimination, through unusual methods, of four candidates attending a job interview at a private company, set against a psychological and humorous backdrop. Questioning the hypocrisy and ambition of today's business world, the play offered students a different atmosphere and an instructive experience.
