Our New Friend in the Modern World: Artificial Intelligence
Will we one day hold philosophical conversations with artificial intelligence? A reading suggestion through Rıdvan Aklan's book "Hey Siri, Could You Draw Me a Path?".
One of the most talked about subjects of recent times is artificial intelligence. Advancing rapidly as technology develops, artificial intelligence is met by some with fearful scenarios, yet its supporters are just as many. In this article, I would like to share a book I came across while exploring the relationship between artificial intelligence and education.
Hey Siri, Could You Draw Me a Path?
Written by Rıdvan Aklan, this book draws attention as much for its contents as for its title. The dialogues, built around an app on the phone we always keep within reach chatting with us like our closest friend, flow very naturally. The book offers the chance to reflect, briefly, on more than thirty subjects that hold an important place in human life.
Will we one day, as technology advances, truly be able to hold philosophical and human conversations with an artificial intelligence friend?
Which Concepts Are Explored?
The book has an unusual structure, because the topics it takes up are the ones right at the centre of our daily lives yet ones we rarely find the time to think about in the rush: kindness, love, greed, loneliness, separation, compassion, friendship, patience, lying, respect, anger, power, arrogance and success. As these concepts are discussed, sometimes Siri and sometimes the author enriches the narrative with stories that carry traces of both the past and the present.
In brief
- Artificial intelligence is entering our lives rapidly, between fear and hope.
- Through a conversation with an artificial intelligence, the book explores more than thirty human concepts.
- It prompts reflection on values that should not be forgotten in the age of technology.
