A child’s success in life comes from a family that lets them take the wheel of their own life. We look at how to respect the small individual and the family factor.
"I took the wheel of my life; the back seat was for my mother and father. From that back seat they always respected my driving of my own life." The way to hear such sentences from a child’s mouth runs through the life architects, the mother, father and teachers, keeping the child’s desires alive and respecting this small individual. In this article, we look at the family factor in a child’s success in life.
How Do We Respect the Small Individual?
You do not expect apples from a plum tree; a good family and teacher try to help the child become a fruitful plum tree. They force no fish to fly and no bird to swim. So how do we show this respect?
Ways of Respecting the Small Individual
By listening
At their eye level if needed; making them feel you take them seriously.
By not postponing
Responding to their need and their question in good time.
By handing over control
Respecting their decisions instead of being their hands and feet.
By appreciating
Celebrating achievements small for you but big for them.
A child whose talents are respected and who sits in the front seat is both a child and an individual.
The Role of the School and PYP
School success alone does not guarantee a child’s success in a profession. However, the IB PYP applied at our school prepares the child for life as a whole, supporting their social, cultural and physical development alongside their academic success. In this program the teacher is also a "lifelong learner"; not at their desk but among the students, side by side with the child. In this way the child gains self-respect and grows with the joy of being on the field.

Doesn’t handing control to the child spoil them?
No. Giving them responsibility for age-appropriate decisions strengthens the child’s self-confidence and decision-making skills; it is trusting, not spoiling.
Is academic success enough for success in life?
On its own it is not enough. Success in life comes together with self-respect, social skills and the ability to manage oneself.
